"Music and Happiness"

Biography

Born in London, Ian Mok studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (Junior Division) under Geneviève Teulières-Sommer and Raphael Sommer, and was a chorister at St. Margaret's, Westminster Abbey. He attended Harvard University and was principal cellist of the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra. Whilst in the States, Ian was also named assistant principal cellist of the Young Artist's Orchestra at Tanglewood, a junior fellow with the New England String Ensemble, and won a chamber music scholarship with the St. Lawrence String Quartet at Stanford.

Returning to London in 2005, Ian became the principal 'cellist of the Royal Orchestral Society and sang tenor with the London Symphony Chorus in the Barbican and the Salle Pleyel in Paris. He also played in a band with singer songwriter Phildel, and featured in her album "The Disappearance of the Girl" (Decca).

During this time, Ian pursued a career in law qualifying as a Solicitor of England & Wales with K&L Gates LLP in 2009 and obtained his Master of Laws from Duke University (2011). He spent several years in the financial services and consulting industry with Goldman Sachs and Deloitte, before leaving Morgan Stanley as a Director to become a professional musician in 2019.  Prior to moving to Hong Kong in 2020, Ian was the co-principal cellist of the London City Orchestra, and performed with the Southbank Sinfonia at the Anghiari Music Festival in Tuscany.

He has been listed as a “Rising Star” by the Hong Kong Generation Next Arts Festival and has performed with concertmaster Jing Wang of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and for dignitaries such as Queen Elizabeth II and Pope John Paul II. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Music at Hong Kong Baptist University, exploring how music can be used to improve happiness.

Music, happiness, and community

... are the three tenets of my ongoing Ph.D. research, and the foundations of my musical practice.

As a musician, I love communicating and sharing the emotions of a piece with the audience, taking us on a journey to where the composer wants us to go. There's nothing like playing, teaching, and being involved in music every day - and I am grateful for the opportunity, as it was nearly ended by a life changing head injury seven years ago.

That moment - and the ensuing eight months where I learnt to walk and talk properly again - taught me that life is short and, if possible, to follow one's passions. And with that realisation, I bade farewell to the legal, consulting, and financial services sectors where I had spent 12 years in industry, and embarked on a change that allows me to combine my love of music with the skills I learnt in these fields.

Like my Ph.D. work, I aim to spark joy and bring people together through music. I am based in Hong Kong, am always willing to travel, and am available to speak. Looking forward to collaborating, performing, and working with you!
